About this collection

Past and present residents of Kulnura celebrated the 100 years of its offiical naming in 2014. A reunion was held in the Kulnura Hall. These images were provided by some of the descendents of the early settlers to the area.

The history of the naming of the area by the early settlers is outlined in Blue Gum Flat To Budgewoi by Charles Swancott pp245/246. Some wonderful stories of resident’s lives and times in the area are recorded by Bill Bottomley in his oral history, The Way It Was: Talking About The Past On The Mountain.

Some confusion over the correct name for the area was resolved in a letter from the PMG’s department sent to W.M Fleming M.H.R on 9 September, 1914 stating “I have to inform you that the Receiving Office established at Mangrove Mountain under Mr Archbold’s charge, which is known at present as Kulmurra, will on and after the 1st proximo, bear the designation of Kulnura – E. J. Young, PMG.”
